German painter (1876-1907) of the Worpswede circle and a close friend of Rilke and his wife Clara Westhoff; 'Der Sanger singt vor einem Furstenkind' is inscribed, in the later editions, to her memory. After her death in childbirth Rilke wrote his 'Requiem fur eine Freundin' for her.
