Charles VI of France
Charles VI
also: Charles the Mad, Charles le Fol, der König
King of France (1368--1422), called the Mad; through long fits of insanity he was left in filth and at times believed himself made of glass. He is the 'king' Malte sets against worldly glory---the sovereign who sank to the very bottom yet was held to endure.
Reading notes
- The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge §409 the king
The unnamed king is Charles VI of France, called the Mad (1368--1422); Malte believes in him---the sovereign who sank to the very bottom---rather than the triumphant kings, since misery endures where glory is only a moment.
